Origin

Historically, it is believed that the term ‘cocker’ came from the days the cocker spaniel was used for hunting woodcock. The ‘spaniel’ can be traced back to the 14th century in Spain. However it wasn’t until the 1800s that the Kennel Club of Great Britain chose to differentiate between the ‘cocker’ and ‘springer’.

Trainability

Cockers are very affectionate, a gentle consistent approach is necessary when training. They are very intelligent and can adapt to new skills quickly. However, it is essential that they receive a high level of stimulation from a young age, to avoid boredom and any destructive tendencies.

Our Cocker Spaniels

Here a Brookteen, our cockers are more of a petite working type; with shorter coats and shorter ear length than that of the show type. Cocker spaniels can be susceptible to hereditary eye disorders, however we are please to announce that all of our Cocker Spaniels have regular eye tests and gonioscopy examinations, all of which are ‘clear’ from any hereditary condition. All of our cocker spaniels are also extensively DNA tested to ensure any puppies we breed at minimal risk of any other hereditary conditions.
