The nations favourite
The breed was built for sport, with it’s muscular and compact stature. They have a short, easy to maintain coat, an extremely friendly demeanour, high level intelligence and lots of energy. Labradors show utmost devotion to their ‘pack’, they are loving people-orientated dogs who demonstrate the highest level of loyalty.
Origin
Historically, it is believed that the Labrador was used by fishermen to help retrieve and haul in their nets, ropes and even fish that had slipped the net. The Labrador Retriever was not founded in Labrador, as the name suggests. But in Newfoundland in the 17th century, originally known as the Saint John’s breed. It didn’t reach British shores until the 19th century, wherein it was bred by the Earl of Malmesbury to resemble the breed we know today.
Trainability
Labradors will grow to be a large & powerful dog, so a firm and consistent approach is necessary when training. They are very intelligent and can adapt to new skills quickly. Their adaptability is shown in the many talents a Labrador is spotted doing; a pet, a gundog, varied assistance dogs, even military dogs etc. The Labrador is extremely intelligent and highly trainable, it is essential that they receive a high level of stimulation from a young age, to avoid boredom and any destructive tendencies.
Here at Brookteen Kennels we are passionate about enhancing the Labrador breed. Our focus is to breed Labradors that demonstrate the best sporting and performance pedigree, with exemplary health scores and fantastic trainable attitudes. All our Labradors are descendants of our first Labrador ‘Jay’. Now six generations down the line, you can still notice elements of ‘Jay’s’ fantastic loving temperament within our puppies.
Our Labrador Retrievers
Labrador Retrievers are susceptible to a range of hereditary disorders. Here at Brookteen Kennels we hold a strong emphasis on eliminating these disorders from the breed. We are pleased to announce that all of our Labradors have regular BVA eye tests examinations, all of which are ‘clear’ from any hereditary condition. All of our Labradors are also extensively DNA tested to ensure any puppies we breed at minimal risk of any other hereditary conditions. All of our Labradors receive screening for hip and elbow dysplasia, a short procedure that is undertaken after 12 months of age. All of Brookteen Kennel’s Labradors scores are well below the recommended grade.
